Lord Jesus, you are our example in prayer,
you are our teacher in prayer,
you are the one in whose name we pray,
because of your life and death and resurrection.
Lord, teach us to pray.
Jesus, you spoke to God as Abba, Father,
you taught your followers to pray the same.
Teach us to pray in intimacy and trust.
Lord, teach us to pray.
Jesus, we read how frequently you drew apart to pray
in solitude and silence.
You commanded your followers to pray in the secret place.
Lord, teach us to pray.
Jesus, you shared the set patterns of daily prayer
and you went to synagogues on the Sabbath.
Teach us to pray familiar prayers with freshness.
Lord, teach us to pray.
Jesus, your teaching is full of the observation of nature
and the small dramas of ordinary human life.
Teach us to pray through the things we see around us.
Lord, teach us to pray.
Jesus, you prayed for your followers,
together and individually by name.
You call us to pray for each other.
Lord, teach us to pray.
Jesus, you said that the harvest is plentiful,
the labourers are few.
We want to pray for the life and outreach of your Church.
Lord, teach us to pray.
Jesus, on the Cross you prayed in desolation,
‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’
Help us to speak to God even out of desolation.
Lord, teach us to pray.
Jesus, you taught your followers to persist in prayer,
to ask, to seek, to knock,
expectant of being answered yet also persevering.
Lord, teach us to pray.
Jesus, you prayed, ‘Your will be done’.
You prayed, ‘Father, glorify your name’.
Teach us how to pray the same,
for the sake of the most that God wants and waits to do.
Lord, teach us to pray.
